    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates all medical devices sold in the United States. As depicted in Figure , there are a variety of possible paths that a medical device manufacturer may follow in order to obtain approval or clearance to market products in the U.S. Many of the simpler, Class I, devices are excepted from the premarket review process. The outlines below can be viewed online or downloaded for later viewing.     The law of the United States comprises many levels of codified and uncodified forms of law, of which the most important is the United States Constitution, which prescribes the foundation of the federal government of the United States, as well as various civil Constitution sets out the boundaries of federal law, which consists of Acts of Congress, treaties ratified by the Senate.
